The good news is that almost all insurance companies now have online portals where you can access benefit, eligibility and claim information conveniently. Although each insurance company provides different information, it is typically comprehensive and can be real time saver when you have a list of aging claims or multiple patients you need to get benefits for.
Setting up an online account is usually a fairly quick process. Your dental practice should first identify a point person and email address who all of the online accounts will be set-up under. Then you will need to have your practice and dentist identification numbers handy, as each insurance company requires different information (e.g. TIN, NPI, license number) to verify the account. Once it is set-up it is critical to keep all of the website addresses, along with user names and passwords, in one spot so any team member that needs access to the accounts has it.
While it might not make sense to set-up an account for every insurance company that runs through your practice, it is definitely worth the time to set-up accounts for the top 5-10 companies that you work with. A little extra work and organization up front can save many hours every week, as well as help your dental practice stay on top of insurance tasks that can quickly stack up.
